Eka Pada Rajakapotasana & How To Do Pigeon Pose

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana comes from the Sanskrit language. Eka means One, Pada means Foot or Leg, Raja means King, Kapota means Pigeon, and Asana means Pose. Hence, it is translated into English one-legged King Pigeon Pose. It is a super hip opener which has been associated with the Svadisthana Chakra (Spleen or Sacred). Opening the hips is also known to Clear a lot of tension, stress and negative energy from the body.

How To Do Pigeon Pose

  • Bring your right knee forward and right wrist. Depending on your body, it can be right behind your wrist or on the outer or inner edge.
  • Experiment with what is right for you and stretch in your outer hips without realizing the knee.
  • Your right ankle is somewhere in front of your left hip.
  • Slide your left foot back and point your toes with your heel pointing toward the ceiling.
  • Shift your hips by bringing your legs together. If necessary, use the support under your right buttock to keep your hips straight.
  • As you inhale, go to your fingertips, lengthen your spine, pull your navel in, and open your chest.
  • As you exhale, bring your hands forward and lower your body towards the floor. You can rest your arms and forehead on the mat.
  • Stay for 5 breaths or more.
  • Each time you exhale, try releasing the tension in your right hip.
  • To exit the pose, push back through your hands, lift your hips, and move your legs into the quarters. Repeat on the other side.
