Supta Virasana Yoga & How To Do The Supta Virasana
The meaning of “Supta” is Reclined and it is a Sanskrit word. In Sanskrit, the meaning of “Vira” is Hero or Warrior; and Asana means Pose, Posture or Sitting. Supta Virasana is a retractable form of Virasana in which the upper body moves backwards so that the back is resting on the floor or on the ground. Your arms are on the floor at your sides, palms facing up. Supta Virasana is the advance level of Virasana. Before practicing this asana you need to perfect yourself in the simple Virasana form. Once you have mastered Virasana, head over to Supta Virasana.
How To Do The Supta Virasana
- First, get into Virasana pose (hero pose).
- Keep your hands by your side.
- Exhale and retreat to the floor.
- Place your weight in your hands, then on your elbows and under your arms.
- As you lean towards your elbows, place your hands behind your back (around the pelvis).
- Then, release your buttocks and lower your back, pushing up toward your tailbone.
- You may complete reclining by going towards the floor or by reclining with support.
- You can use two ceilings of the same height for your supports. This blanket will help you when you get down.
- Stay in the position for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- If you are good at it, you can hold it for 5 minutes.
