Garudasana Yoga & Its Health Benefits

The name Garudasana comes from the Sanskrit language Garuda which means “eagle”, and Asana which means “Posture” or “Seat”. In Hindu mythology, Garudasana is known as the king of birds. She carried the god Vishnu and loved to fight against demons. This word is usually used as “eagle” in English, but according to the dictionary the name literally means “to devour” because Garuda was originally identified with “a fire that consumes all sunlight”. This constant asana enhances concentration. It focuses on the ankles, calves, thighs, hips, and shoulders.

Health Benefits Of Garudasana

  • This improves the body’s sense of balance.
  • It also strengthens the leg muscles.
  • It relaxes the joints of the legs.
  • It relieves sciatica and rheumatism in the joints of the feet.

How To Do Garudasana

  • Stand straight on both feet. Lift your right leg and wrap it around your left leg.
  • The right thigh should be above the left thigh and the right leg should touch the calf muscles from behind.
  • The right hand is also wrapped around the left hand.
  • Now gather your palms together to resemble an eagle’s beak.
  • Trying to maintain balance, slowly bend your left leg and lower your body until your right toe touches the floor.
  • Try to stay in this position for a long time to keep your balance.
  • Focus on balancing your posture.
  • Now straighten your left leg and right leg. Also release your right arm and return to normal position.
  • Relax for sometime and continue the same process.
