Gyan Mudra – Powerful Mudra for Meditation
Gyan Mudra is considered to be among one of the most important mudras. It has been practiced in meditation for thousands of years and brings peace, tranquility(calm) and further spiritual progress.
Gyan Mudra represents as the “Mudra for Wisdom of Knowledge” as it brings to mind the greatest version of yourself and allows you to pass the hours of your life with ease and calm. It stimulates wisdom and knowledge. Gyan Mudra brings highest consciousness to oneself.
Meaning of Gyan Mudra (Jnana Mudra)
“Gyan Mudra” derived from Sanskrit as “Gyan (Jnana)” Means Knowledge or Wisdom and “Mudra” Means Gesture. Index finger represents individual soul as thumb finger represents supreme divine soul and other three straight fingers represents gunas of sattva, rajas, tamas. Gyan Mudra denotes the Mudra for wisdom of knowledge.
How To Perform Gyan Mudra
- First, sit in a comfortable sitting position and place your hands on your hips or knees, palms up.
- Keep your back straight, head and chest held high
- Meditation postures like Padmasana, Siddhasana, Swastikasana, Vajrasana etc are ideal for mudra practice.
- Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths while being aware of the breathing process.
- Now drop your index finger and tap the tip of your thumb with the tip of your index finger.
- The remaining three fingers should be stretched as far as possible.
- To remove all thoughts from the mind, the mind is only allowed to concentrate on “OM” Mantra.
- Also, this should be done with both hands at the same time.
- Don’t let the breathing rate drop.
- Perform this pose for 35 minutes daily or for 10 to 12 minutes three times a day.

Side Effects & Precautions
There are no major side effects in performing gyan mudra as it is one of the powerful yoga mudra to relive stress and mental tensions and it can be perfomed at any time or any movement except few precautions.
- Only sit in a plain ground or Plain surface.
- If you are suffering with tailbone pain then perform sitting on Orthopedic Coccyx Seat Cushion to feel better and avoid long duration of this asana.
- Do not immediately take a position after eating or drinking tea and coffee.
- This mudra should be performed on an empty stomach.
- Do no overstretch you back. Just Keep your back straight and if you are suffering from back pain manage by performing shorter duration into 2-3 sets.
Here are some more precautions that you should take while performing this mudra:
- Wear comfortable clothes while practicing this mudra. A Uneasy cloths can affect your concentration.
- The air element is already present in Vata Dosha. This mudra increases the amount of air element in the body. Therefore, when you have a vata dosha, do this mudra moderately.
